Joanna Michelic Lawrence trained in classical ballet and modern dance at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Milwaukee Ballet School, Makaroff School of Ballet, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has performed in numerous productions of ballets from the classical repertoire, and in works by choreographers including George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Heather Malloy, Jin Wen Yu, Christopher Walker, and Nadia Thompson. After a haitus from dance to pursue academic education, Joanna joined the Cambridge University Ballet Club (CUBC) in 2018, performing principal and soloist roles in their 2018, 2019, and 2024 annual productions (Odile in Swan Lake, Queen of the Dryads and Street Dancer in Don Quixote, Cinderella in Cinderella).
Joanna has been teaching for the Ballet Club since 2018, and is passionate about helping students to embrace the joy of dance through ballet. She has also taught open classes at Bodywork Company and Ballet at Bodywork Company Theatre School in Cambridge. In 2019-2020 Joanna served as President of the CU Ballet Club, directing her original choreography and production of Scheherazade as an ADC Late Show in 2019, as well as the Club’s original version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at West Road Concert Hall for the annual 2020 show. She also contributed choreography for the Club’s 2018 (Swan Lake), 2019 (Don Quixote), 2023 (Coppélia), and 2024 (Cinderella) performances.
